OCEAN ADVENTURE CAMP
Summer Day Camp Program Ages 5-12

Looking for a fun, exciting AND educational camp for summer? Sign up for our Ocean Adventure Camp this summer and experience a unique hands-on approach to marine science. Each week has a different ocean related theme and is filled with projects, crafts and aquatic fun designed to promote ocean sciences and conservation. Campers will enjoy weekly field trips, kayaking, snorkeling, an expedition on our research vessel and much, much more!

Ocean Adventure Camp runs for nine weeks from June 23rd to August 22nd. Tuition is $160 per week with the exception of week 2 (see below). The day starts at 9:00am and ends at 3:00pm. We offer extended care for an extra charge of $5.00 per session (we offer two sessions per day, morning from 7:30am-9am and afternoon from 3:15pm-5:00pm). This camp is open to kids ages 5-12. For your teens, try our new Junior Oceanographer Teen Camp.

Week 1 & 6
Session 1 June 23 – 27, Session 2 July 28 – August 1

LIQUID JUNGLES
Travel through the amazing liquid jungles found just below the surface of our oceans! The world of fish and their habitats is vast and diverse. This week will cover many different ocean environments such as kelp forests and coral reefs, and illustrate why each habitat is unique not only in structure but in resources for inhabitant survival as well. Campers will learn about the fastest growing forest in the world and realize that coral reefs are complex aggressive predators. Most of all, the campers will understand how important these habitats really are, not only to the ocean but to humans as well.

Week 2 ($130 for this week only)
Session 1 June 30- July 3 (no camp July 4th)

MYSTERIES OF THE DEEP
Ever wonder what lives in the darkest depths of the sea? Campers will explore the mysteries of the deep and discover the secrets of the ocean! They will learn about the amazing adaptations and abilities of the strange creatures that live in this unfamiliar habitat. Campers will partake in hands-on activities and experiments to demonstrate the harshness of this environment.

Week 3 & 7
Session 1 July 7 – 11, Session 2 August 4 – 8

SOARING FROM SKY TO SHORE
Come soar through the wild world of wetlands! Our campers will see first-hand the effects of pollution on the marine environment and the animals that live within it. They will investigate the different marine birds that live in the area and learn about their adaptations that enable them to survive. Whether learning about cormorants, diving 100 feet below the surface of the ocean or pelicans plunging into the water from 10 stories high, campers will have a better understanding of both marine birds and their delicate habitats.

Week 4 & 8
Session 1 July 14 – 18, Session 2 August 11 – 15

WHALES AND FRIENDS
Journey with a gray whale as it travels 10,000 miles along the coast! This week will focus on some of the most magnificent animals that live in our oceans: marine mammals and marine plankton. Campers will learn all about plankton, whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions. In each session, campers will get a hands-on look at marine invertebrates collected on our excursion aboard the R/V CONQUEROR or CHALLENGER. We will also be on the lookout for local marine mammals that may be hanging out in the Long Beach Harbor.

Week 5 & 9
Session 1 July 21 – 25, Session 2 August 18 – 22

SHARK DAYS
Come explore the extraordinary world of sharks and their relatives the “bony fish”! Did you know that a shark is a special type of fish? During this week, campers will learn what makes a shark unique and dispel some of the myths that have given sharks such a bad reputation. Campers will also discover the many incredible adaptations that fish have to help them survive in their ocean habitats. Day campers will participate in ocean themed crafts and activities to help them better understand the concepts being taught.

JUNIOR OCEANOGRAPHER
Summer Day Program Ages 13-15

This oceanography and marine science camp is designed for teens enthusiastic about learning and exploring our marine environment. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in oceanographic research and exploration with hands-on activities and field trips designed to re-enforce concepts learned.

This camp will better acquaint students with the basic elements of geology, physics, chemistry and biology. Weekly adventures include up two boat excursions, kayaking, snorkeling, tide pooling and beach expeditions.

This program will run for three weeks from July 28th to August 15th. Each week will focus on a specific aspect of oceanography with convergent themes. Pricing for this program is $250 per week or $700 for three weeks. Sign up today!

Week 1
July 28 – August 1

Physical Oceanography
Come join us for a fascinating week focusing on the physical phenomena in the Pacific Ocean. Ride a wave from its origin in the South Pacific all the way to the shores of California. Or investigate the formation of an island above a string of underwater volcanoes! During this week, campers will examine the geological, chemical and physical parameters of the Pacific Ocean and learn how this ecosystem sustains such a large diversity of life.

Week 2
August 4-8

Coastal Wonders
Soar from the mountaintops to the sandy shores with the majestic shorebirds and other wildlife of Southern California. Follow a stream as it transforms into a river and journeys through the landscape down to the ocean. This camp will allow campers to explore the intricate dynamics of a watershed and observe the pivotal role wetlands play in the water cycle.

Week 3
August 11-15

Under the Sea
Ever wonder how a 300,000 pound blue whale travels 10,000 miles each year? Join us this week for an extensive look into the various organisms that inhabit the great Pacific Ocean. From microscopic plankton to a top predator such as a Great White Shark, campers will understand elaborate workings of the marine ecosystem
