Catalina Island Adventure

Catlaina Island - Catalina Camp- Other Overnight Programs

An Island Adventure
Like No Other

Come aboard the research vessel Conqueror and work the island the way the experts do. The voyage begins with a collection of marine organisms using the vessel's otter trawl net. From the start, students begin documenting the diversity of ocean life in Southern California. Using scientific tools and apparatus, we catalog marine life from up to six habitats over a three day period, duplicating the scientific method used by professional oceanographers.

Exploring the island and its surrounding marine communities is accomplished by using Conqueror's collecting and monitoring equipment, exploratory hikes at the Isthmus (Two Harbors), skin diving and an extensive ocean kayaking trip. Students go home having accomplished an extraordinary survey of ecosystems between Long Beach and Catalina, having completed a voyage log, performed data analysis and reported findings regarding the health and diversity of the coastal habitats.
