Catalina
Expedition |

|
Our exciting new
program called the “Catalina Expedition”
is a one day scientific excursion to Catalina
Island aboard our new fully equipped Research
Vessel Challenger. The Challenger will take
you from Long Beach Harbor to Campus by the
Sea, which is the perfect setting for one
of the finest outdoor educational experience
available anywhere.
This day program includes kayaking, snorkeling,
ecology hike, trawl, sediment grab and fishing.
|
Kayaking includes
a coastal survey of local marine birds and
marine animals. We will discuss various habitats
and the adaptations suited for these habitats.
Snorkeling covers sub tidal survey of kelp
beds, sandy bottom and rocky bottom. We will
explore the organisms in this environment
and get a first hand look at their anatomy
and behavior. |

|
Ecology hike allows for an in-depth look at
Catalina Island ecology, including a discussion
on endemic, native and non-native plants in
different biomes.
The Otter trawl provides a collection of fish
and invertebrates that live along the sea floor.
These animals are sorted, identified and recorded
by the class.
Van Veen grab-sampler collects ocean sediments
to be sieved by students to expose the burrowing
organisms that live near the Southern California
beaches.
Your day concludes with a BBQ dinner aboard
the Challenger. |
